As a couple, we had the intention of bringing back tatami mats to install in small area at the basement of our house. We found Mr. Morita's business on the web along with a recommendation from a Japanese friend who lives aboard.
The shop is small but right away we knew we entered a traditional, family-owned Japanese tatami manufacturer. Mr. Morita took the time to explain to us the different possibilities of thickness, type, color and borders that could be made.
Our original idea was a 9’x9’ surface. The proposal of 4 rectangles along with a square in the middle was nice but the tatamis would have had to be shipped. Estimated shipping cost to Canada was around 4,000$ + import/taxes.
In order to avoid the high shipping costs and after specifying the maximum weight and total dimensions of the airline checked baggage policy, Mr. Morita proposed 9 squares of 90 cm x 90 cm. This resulted in 2 packages of 100cm x 100cm of 26 and 22kg respectively which, although being oversized for the airline, still met the requirements to be carried on board as checked bags.
Mr. Morita also printed the necessary documentation and English invoice for customs usage.
Packages were shipped to Narita airport for an additional fee and were waiting for us upon departure. We checked them without any issues and cleared customs upon arrival in Canada without any issues.
Throughout the various steps, Mr. Morita provided updates on estimated weight (it was really important not to exceed 32kg/70lbs which is the maximum the airline accepts), tracking references to pick up the package, etc. We couldn't have asked for more.
All in all, a fantastic experience and an incredible custom made souvenir from Japan! We couldn’t be happier!! We managed to get what we wanted without having to pay high transportation and import fees.
Photos of the 9 squares attached for reference (note: tatami mats are not at the final location and will be placed elsewhere).
Arigato gozaimasu Mr. Morita for all your help!! 🙏

This was my first time purchasing something overseas, so I was a little worried, but I received very courteous service from start to finish. The packaging was also very careful, and considering that it's run by a single person, I was impressed by the company's efforts. I would definitely purchase from you again if I have the opportunity. Thank you very much.

Congratulations on hiring 007. Your approach to overseas markets via the internet has paid off. 120 tatami mats in 10 days. You must have worked without sleep. 👍 This news really excited me. I saw the movie. Bless you!
007... Speaking of which, I heard it was also used in the Paris Collection in 2018. It's the pride of Japan.
